Step II: Exfoliate
Sometimes, even a sophisticated organ like your skin needs a bit of assistance in performing what should come naturally. Exfoliation, the loosening of dead skin cells from the upper layer of the skin, has risen in prominence, and with good reason. That accumulated debris dulls the complexion, more so as we age and our cell turnover slows down. Regular use of an exfoliant-particularly a microderm treatment helps exfoliate without being abrasive or damaging your skin. It also allows better penetration of the moisturizer and other treatments that follow it.
Just be careful as it's easy to get overzealous about exfoliating. If a granular scrub is your preferred tool (like a microderm treatment), choose one with perfectly spherical particles, such as jojoba beads, that don't scratch the skin. Also, don't rub too vigorously as you can cause stress and damage to your skin.
Quick Tips:
- Always use scrubs on wet skin. Used dry, they can drag and pull your skin.
- Don't use scrubs as your cleanser. They don't have the ingredients to break down oil like a cleanser does. Use scrubs to exfoliate dead cells and stimulate circulation.
- Exfoliating prior to a special occasion will have a two-fold benefit for your skin. First, it will exfoliate dead skin cells, making the surface smoother, helping your makeup go on better. It will also stimulate circulation, making your skin look luminous.
